Announcing The New VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture Incorporates Cloud, On-Prem, and Multi-site Design

The VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture is now available and is a must read for anyone considering, designing, or undertaking a digital workspace project using VMware Workspace ONE, VMware Horizon 7, or VMware Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure. it provides a framework and guidance for architecting using Workspace ONE and Horizon, whether using cloud-based deployments or installing on-premises.

The VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture guide provides a framework and guidance for architecting using Workspace ONE and Horizon, whether using cloud-based deployments or installing on-premises. Design guidance is given for each product—with a corresponding component design chapter devoted to each product—followed by chapters that provide best practices for integrating the components into a complete platform.

Workspace ONE combines identity and mobility management to provide frictionless and secure access to all the apps and data that employees need to do their work, wherever, whenever, and from whatever device they choose. Mobile device and identity services are delivered through VMware Workspace ONE Unified Endpoint Management (UEM), powered by AirWatch, and VMware Identity Manager.

Additionally, Workspace ONE integrates with VMware Horizon virtual desktops and published applications delivered through Horizon 7 and Horizon Cloud Service on Microsoft Azure. This integration provides fast single-sign-on (SSO) access to a Windows desktop or set of Windows applications for people who use the service.

The example architecture and deployment described in the VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture addresses key business drivers. The approach taken is, as with any technology solution, to start by defining those business drivers and then identify use cases that need to be addressed. Each use case will entail a set of requirements that need to be fulfilled to satisfy the use case and the business drivers.

Once the requirements are understood, the solutions can be defined and blueprints outlined for the services to be delivered. This step allows you to identify and understand the products, components, and parts that need to be designed, built, and integrated.

To deliver a Workspace ONE and Horizon solution, you build services efficiently from several reusable components. This modular, repeatable design approach combines components and services to customize the end-user experience without requiring specific configurations for individual users. The resultant environment and services can be easily adapted to address changes in the business and use case requirements.

The VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture has undergone testing and validation with regards to component design and build, service build, integration, and user workflow to ensure that all objectives are met, that use cases are delivered properly, and that real-world implementation is achievable. The design decisions made for the environment that was built are listed throughout the document, along with the rationale for each decision and descriptions of the design considerations.

The VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture subsumes content from and replaces older reference architecture guides. Content has been rewritten and expanded on, to give updated product guidance and also for clarity. New content has been added to cover new topics and products such as VMware Workspace ONE Intelligence.

To accompany the new reference architecture, we have also created a series of short videos. This gives you an introduction to architecting and designing end-user solutions using VMware products and the full content contained in the guide.

Go read the VMware Workspace ONE and VMware Horizon Reference Architecture guide now to get started planning your digital workspace using Workspace ONE and Horizon.
